Console Table Dimensions: Complete Size Guide in Inches, cm & Feet (Full Chart)

HOW- TO, USEFUL TIPS Alex
Console Table Dimensions

Standard console table dimensions are 28 to 36 inches high, 12 to 18 inches deep, and 30 to 72 inches long. If you want the most popular size, look for a rectangular table about 36 to 48 inches wide, 14 inches deep, and 30 inches tall. That slim profile gives you a full display surface without crowding your entryway or hallway.

Of course, the right console table size for your space depends on where you place the table. So in this guide, we walk you through every placement, one by one.

Here at Flowyline, our team has supplied metal legs for thousands of customer-built console table projects. That means the numbers below come from real builds and designer guidelines. Read more below!

Quick Console Table Dimensions Sizing Summary

  • Behind a sofa: About 2/3 to 3/4 of the sofa length
  • Entryway: Leave 6 to 12 inches of wall space on each side
  • Hallway: Prioritize walking clearance and choose a narrow depth
  • Large wall: Choose a longer console table so it doesn’t look lost.

What Is a Console Table?

A console table is a long, shallow, waist-high table that you place against a wall or behind a sofa. Because it sits so slim, it fits where other furniture simply cannot: entry halls, corridors, and that awkward strip of wall behind your couch.

When you place one by the front door, people often call it a foyer table or entrance table. They're different names, but the same table.

Standard Console Table Dimensions: Quick Chart Comparison

The standard dimensions of a console table fall into 3 ranges. If you remember nothing else from this guide, you should remember 48" long, 14" deep, and 30" high. That combination is the most common console table size on the market today.

Dimension Typical range Most common
Height 28 — 36 in 30 in
Depth 12 — 18 in 14 — 15 in
Length 30 — 72 in 40 — 60 in

Now, let's look at each number a little closer.

  • Height: Most consoles stand 30 inches tall. That lands right around your hip, so you can drop your keys or rest a hand without bending. Entryway consoles usually run taller, around 32 to 36 inches, because they need presence. Sofa tables run shorter, around 28 to 30 inches, so they never rise above the sofa back.

If want to nail the exact height for your room? We break it all down in How Tall Should a Console Table Be.

  • Depth: In interior design, depth is what makes a console a console. At 12 to 18 inches deep, it holds a lamp, a tray, and a plant, yet it stays out of the walking path. Go much under 8 inches, though, and you basically own a floating shelf on legs. A tippy one, too.
  • Length: Length varies the most. Retail consoles run from about 30 inches to a full 72 inches, and extra-long designs stretch past 80 inches for big walls and sectionals.

Note: If you build your own table, you will probably work in console table dimensions in mm, since leg makers (Flowyline included) list every product in both millimeters and inches.

You can cross-check any leg against our Size Guide. Prefer the big picture instead? In console table dimensions in feet, a standard console runs roughly 4 feet long, 2.5 feet tall, and a touch over 1 foot deep.

With a long console table, you can try the size below. The table’s height is 36.3”, depth is 16.5”, and length is 70”.

Console Table Dimensions by Placement

The right console table size changes with the job. Thus, here are the 3 classic placements, from the front door to the living room.

1. Entryway and Foyer

First, with an entryway console (your classic foyer table), you'll need to aim for 32 to 34 inches tall, 12 to 14 inches deep, and about two-thirds the width of the wall behind it.

In simpler terms, you measure your wall and multiply by 0.66.

For example, a 6-foot wall calls for roughly a 48-inch table, which leaves 4 to 6 inches of breathing room on each side.

On top of that, here are 2 rules most homeowners skip:

  • Run the door-swing test: Open your front door all the way and measure from the farthest point of the handle, not the hinge. Then place the front edge of your entrance table at least 4 to 6 inches beyond that arc so the door never clips it.
  • Protect the walkway: You should leave 30 to 36 inches of clear floor in front of the table so two people can pass through the entry without turning sideways.

2. Behind a Sofa

You need to get 3 numbers right here.

  • Height: Match the sofa back, or go 1 to 2 inches lower. DON'T EVER GO TALLER. Also, measure to the top of the sofa frame, not the cushions, because cushions add 2 to 4 inches, which you shouldn't count. A too-tall console looks top-heavy and peeks awkwardly above the sofa line.
  • Length: It's recommended to aim for two-thirds to three-quarters of your sofa's length, and never go longer than the sofa itself.

Here is a quick reference:

Sofa length Console length
72 in (6 ft) 48 — 54 in
84 in (7 ft) 56 — 64 in
96 in (8 ft) 64 — 72 in
Sectional 2/3 — 3/4 of the longest straight section
  • Depth: Stay between 10 and 15 inches. Pick 10 to 12 if the table only holds decor, or 14 to 15 if you plan to set drinks and lamps on it. And what about the gap behind the sofa? If people walk through there, keep a 30 to 36-inch path. If not, you should slide the console nearly flush and leave a 2 to 6 inch gap so the two pieces read as connected without touching.

3. Hallway

Hallways reward slim tables. Therefore, 10 to 14 inches deep is a good size, and check the math before you buy: your hallway width minus the table depth must leave at least 30 inches of walkway. We find 36 inches feels much more comfortable.

And here is some honest advice. If your hallway measures 36 inches wide or less, even a slim console will pinch the path. In our experience, you need about 42 inches of hallway width before a console truly fits.

Small Console Table Dimensions (Narrow & Compact)

Living in an apartment or a condo? Working around a doorway that barely gives you room to turn? Small console table dimensions are the ones that fit these spaces tend to measure between 24 and 36 inches long, 8 to 12 inches deep, and 28 to 32 inches tall.

Don't let the modest footprint fool you. A narrow entryway table in that range still holds everything you actually reach for on your way out the door, your keys, the mail, and a single lamp. It does all of that without eating into a floor plan you can't spare.

That said, keep 2 cautions in mind with a small entrance table:

  • First, below about 8 inches of depth, a console starts acting like a shelf and loses its usable surface.
  • Second, the narrower the top, the more the base matters, because a slim table with a poorly placed base tips easily. So anchor very narrow designs to the wall, or choose a leg style with a wide, stable footprint.

Console Table Dimensions with Drawers

In this section, storage changes the math. Typical console table dimensions with drawers run 15 to 18 inches deep (drawer boxes need room), 30 to 34 inches tall, and 36 to 60 inches long.

Furthermore, plan for the pull-out: a drawer needs its own depth again in front of the clearance. In other words, a 16-inch-deep storage console really uses about 32 inches of space when you open it.

Drawers add weight, too. If you build one yourself, base placement decides the stability, and our guide on Where to Place Table Legs covers the overhang rules.

TV Console Table Dimensions

A media console is a different animal from the tables above, and mixing them up is the most common sizing mistake we see. Here are the standard TV console table dimensions compared side by side:

Dimension Media console Regular console table
Height 17 — 26 in 28 — 36 in
Depth 16 — 18 in 12 — 18 in
Width TV width + 2 — 3 in per side (minimum) Sized to wall or sofa

But why so much lower? Your eyes decide it. From a typical sofa, your seated eye level sits 40 to 46 inches off the floor, and the center of the screen should land around 42 inches. Only a 17 to 26-inch stand puts most TVs there.

In terms of width, you need to extend the console at least 2 to 3 inches past the TV on each side. You will often read "6 inches per side" online, but that number is a comfortable maximum, not a requirement.

As a result, a 65-inch TV, which measures about 57 inches wide, needs a console at least 62 to 63 inches wide. As for the extra depth, those 16 to 18 inches exist to fit your AV gear with ventilation space behind it.

How to Measure Your Space: 5 Steps

Before you buy or build, run through this five-minute checklist:

  • Step 1: Measure the wall or sofa the console will sit against, end to end.
  • Step 2: Apply the two-thirds rule. You multiply by 0.66 to get your target table length.
  • Step 3: Subtract the walkway. Confirm at least 30 to 36 inches of clear floor remains in front of (or behind) the table.
  • Step 4: Check the door swing in entryways. Keep the table edge 4 to 6 inches past the handle's arc.
  • Step 5: Check the height anchor. Use the sofa-back height for sofa tables, or 32 to 34 inches for entries.

Plan to build rather than buy? Then pair your top with the right base using 15+ Types of Table Legs, and get the top right with How Thick Should a Table Top Be. Narrow tops especially reward a sculptural metal base, because it adds stability and turns a simple plank into a statement piece.

FAQs

1. What Is a Good Depth for a Console Table?

A good depth for a console table is 12 to 18 inches, and 14 to 15 inches works for most homes. Behind a sofa, stay between 10 and 15 inches. In a tight hallway, drop to 10 to 14 inches. Still, you should avoid anything under 8 inches deep, because the table starts acting like a shelf and tips easily.

2. What Is the Rule for a Console Table?

The rule of thumb for a console table is two-thirds. Behind a sofa, you should choose a table about two-thirds of the sofa's length, and match the sofa back height or go 1 to 2 inches lower. Against a wall, cover about two-thirds of the wall's width. Then leave 30 to 36 inches of walkway in front so traffic flows freely.

3. Can a Console Table Be Longer Than the Sofa?

No, it can't. Equal length is the absolute maximum, and two-thirds to three-quarters looks best. A table that pokes past the armrests catches hips and makes your sofa look like an accessory to the table.

4. How Far Should a Console Table Stick Out?

Standard console tables stick out 12 to 18 inches from the wall. Behind a sofa, stay in the 10 to 15 inch range. In a tight hallway, keep it between 10 and 14 inches.

5. How Big Should a Console Table Be Against a Wall?

Measure your wall and multiply by 0.66 to get your table length. For example, a 6-foot wall calls for a 48-inch console, which leaves 4 to 6 inches of open wall on each side. With height and depth, you aim for 30 to 34 inches tall and 12 to 14 inches deep.
