Console Table Dimensions by Placement
The right console table size changes with the job. Thus, here are the 3 classic placements, from the front door to the living room.
1. Entryway and Foyer
First, with an entryway console (your classic foyer table), you'll need to aim for 32 to 34 inches tall, 12 to 14 inches deep, and about two-thirds the width of the wall behind it.
In simpler terms, you measure your wall and multiply by 0.66.
For example, a 6-foot wall calls for roughly a 48-inch table, which leaves 4 to 6 inches of breathing room on each side.
On top of that, here are 2 rules most homeowners skip:
- Run the door-swing test: Open your front door all the way and measure from the farthest point of the handle, not the hinge. Then place the front edge of your entrance table at least 4 to 6 inches beyond that arc so the door never clips it.
- Protect the walkway: You should leave 30 to 36 inches of clear floor in front of the table so two people can pass through the entry without turning sideways.

2. Behind a Sofa
You need to get 3 numbers right here.
- Height: Match the sofa back, or go 1 to 2 inches lower. DON'T EVER GO TALLER. Also, measure to the top of the sofa frame, not the cushions, because cushions add 2 to 4 inches, which you shouldn't count. A too-tall console looks top-heavy and peeks awkwardly above the sofa line.
- Length: It's recommended to aim for two-thirds to three-quarters of your sofa's length, and never go longer than the sofa itself.

- Depth: Stay between 10 and 15 inches. Pick 10 to 12 if the table only holds decor, or 14 to 15 if you plan to set drinks and lamps on it. And what about the gap behind the sofa? If people walk through there, keep a 30 to 36-inch path. If not, you should slide the console nearly flush and leave a 2 to 6 inch gap so the two pieces read as connected without touching.
3. Hallway
Hallways reward slim tables. Therefore, 10 to 14 inches deep is a good size, and check the math before you buy: your hallway width minus the table depth must leave at least 30 inches of walkway. We find 36 inches feels much more comfortable.
And here is some honest advice. If your hallway measures 36 inches wide or less, even a slim console will pinch the path. In our experience, you need about 42 inches of hallway width before a console truly fits.
Small Console Table Dimensions (Narrow & Compact)
Living in an apartment or a condo? Working around a doorway that barely gives you room to turn? Small console table dimensions are the ones that fit these spaces tend to measure between 24 and 36 inches long, 8 to 12 inches deep, and 28 to 32 inches tall.
Don't let the modest footprint fool you. A narrow entryway table in that range still holds everything you actually reach for on your way out the door, your keys, the mail, and a single lamp. It does all of that without eating into a floor plan you can't spare.
That said, keep 2 cautions in mind with a small entrance table:
- First, below about 8 inches of depth, a console starts acting like a shelf and loses its usable surface.
- Second, the narrower the top, the more the base matters, because a slim table with a poorly placed base tips easily. So anchor very narrow designs to the wall, or choose a leg style with a wide, stable footprint.
Console Table Dimensions with Drawers
In this section, storage changes the math. Typical console table dimensions with drawers run 15 to 18 inches deep (drawer boxes need room), 30 to 34 inches tall, and 36 to 60 inches long.
Furthermore, plan for the pull-out: a drawer needs its own depth again in front of the clearance. In other words, a 16-inch-deep storage console really uses about 32 inches of space when you open it.

A media console is a different animal from the tables above, and mixing them up is the most common sizing mistake we see. Here are the standard TV console table dimensions compared side by side:

But why so much lower? Your eyes decide it. From a typical sofa, your seated eye level sits 40 to 46 inches off the floor, and the center of the screen should land around 42 inches. Only a 17 to 26-inch stand puts most TVs there.
In terms of width, you need to extend the console at least 2 to 3 inches past the TV on each side. You will often read "6 inches per side" online, but that number is a comfortable maximum, not a requirement.
As a result, a 65-inch TV, which measures about 57 inches wide, needs a console at least 62 to 63 inches wide. As for the extra depth, those 16 to 18 inches exist to fit your AV gear with ventilation space behind it.
How to Measure Your Space: 5 Steps

- Step 1: Measure the wall or sofa the console will sit against, end to end.
- Step 2: Apply the two-thirds rule. You multiply by 0.66 to get your target table length.
- Step 3: Subtract the walkway. Confirm at least 30 to 36 inches of clear floor remains in front of (or behind) the table.
